On October 1st, 1949, the founding ceremony of the Peoples' Republic of China was held grandly in Tiananmen Gate Tower. A precious photo witnessed and recorded this important historical moment. In the photo, an old man with a silver beard stood behind Chairman Mao to the left. Although thin in figure, he was gentle, elegant and awe-inspiring.

1949年10月1日，中华人民共和国开国大典在天安门城楼隆重举行。一张珍贵的照片见证并记录下这一重要的历史时刻。照片中一位银髯飘逸的老者站立于毛主席左后方。他虽身材清瘦，但不失凛然威严。

Why was this old man so important as to stand beside the chairman? He was Shen Junru, former chairman of the Central Committee of the Democratic League, the first president of the Supreme People's Court of New China, who was praised as the banner of the leftists of democrats.

这位老者到底拥有怎样重要的地位，竟能够站在主席的身边？他就是原民盟中央主席、新中国第一任最高人民法院院长，被赞誉为“民主人士左派的旗帜”的沈钧儒。

In 1949, Shen Junru, 75 years old, was appointed president of the Supreme People's Court by New China. Mr.Shen accepted this important post without hesitation, hoping to contribute his last strength to the country in his lifetime.

1949年，已是75岁高龄的沈钧儒先生被新中国任命为最高人民法院院长。沈老毫不犹豫地接受了这份重要职务，希望在有生之年为国家贡献出最后的力量。

After taking office, in order to establish the people's judicial system faster and better, Mr. Shen spared no effort to conduct in-depth investigations among the people and worked hard for the long-term stability of the PRC. On February 1st, 1952, in Beijing's Forbidden City Concert Hall, he personally used several long tables and a tablecloth to set up the bench of a temporary court of the Supreme People's Court. Shen Junru, president of the Supreme People's Court, with a long beard and a stern look, sat in the middle. He personally served as presiding judge for the public trial of embezzlers to deter criminals.

上任后，为了更快更好地建立起人民司法制度，沈老常不辞辛劳到人民群众中深入调研，为中华人民共和国的长治久安殚精竭虑。1952年2月1日，在北京中山公园音乐堂，他亲自用几张长桌、一块桌布搭建出最高人民法院临时法庭的审判席。长须飘飘、神色严峻的最高人民法院院长沈钧儒端坐正中，他亲任审判长公审贪污犯，震慑犯罪分子。

In 1954, the Central People's Government began to draft a constitution. Mr. Shen, nearly 80 years old, devoted himself to the drafting of the constitution regardless of his advanced age. Eventually, in the First National People's Congress, the first Constitution of the People's Republic of China was passed smoothly. Mr. Shen contributed a lot to the promulgation of the Constitution.

1954年，中央人民政府开始起草宪法。已年近八旬的沈钧儒不顾高龄，全身心地投入到宪法起草工作中。最终，在第一届全国人民代表大会中，中华人民共和国第一部宪法顺利通过。沈钧儒先生对于宪法的出台，可谓功不可没。

New China's legal system construction has been under way for more than half a century, and has achieved world-renowned achievements. Nowadays, in our highly developed socialist legal system, we should all the remember Shen Junru, the founder of the Supreme People's Court!

中国的法制建设走过了半个多世纪，取得了举世瞩目的成就。在社会主义法制建设高度发展的今天，我们更应该铭记沈钧儒，这位最高人民法院的奠基者！
